In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
